Elisa has chosen the Allard Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Clinic as the recipient for all donations collected for January and February 2024. Located at The Lois Hole Hospital for Women over on Kingsway Avenue in central Edmonton, this very specialized clinic is the only one of its kind in Alberta. For those that don’t know, Hereditary Cancers, or “risky genes” are within the DNA of 1.3 million Canadians, and the primary goal of a clinic such as HBOC is to be able to advance research to a point where these genes are more readily identifiable and thus, able to be treated before they become deadly.
So are you mulling over whether you should make a donation to the Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Clinic right now? Well, mull no further. A donation to this very noble and worthy cause will see your money go to three primary areas of concern. The first would be aimed at reducing lengthy wait times to allow the clinic to be able to be in a position to be open more than only 2 half days per week. The clinic sees as many as 50 new referrals each month and there is simply not enough time to be able to see all these patients. The second target area for funds would be to ease the pressure by adding additional staff and patient support members to the clinic to add to the 5 physicians and 1 nurse practitioner that they currently have. The third reason is to be able to expand the research capabilities for the treatment of ovarian and breast cancers, specifically by enhancing genetic testing, establishing a more comprehensive database, and enhancing education.
