I was super interested in hearing about this non profit when Jessica Montgomery met up with me for a donairs in Edmonton’s north end. Occasionally I get to learn a bit about a charity or non profit The Jessica Martel Memorial Foundation is a powerful force for change in the Edmonton region’s response to domestic violence. Established in memory of Jessica Martel—a young mother whose life was tragically taken in 2009—the foundation was created to ensure that no individual or family fleeing abuse is left without support, protection, or hope. What began as a commitment to honor Jessica’s legacy has grown into a comprehensive network of services designed to break the cycle of violence.
At the center of its work is Jessie’s House, a 35-bed, all-gender emergency shelter that operates 24/7. Built to provide a safe haven during moments of crisis, Jessie’s House offers more than just a secure place to stay. Residents receive trauma-informed, client-centered care, including safety planning, crisis intervention, outreach services, and connections to community resources. The goal is not only immediate safety, but also long-term stability and empowerment.
Like Jessie’s place, For individuals and families ready to transition toward independence, Eileen’s Place offers second-stage housing with continued support. This program provides longer-term accommodation and guidance, helping survivors rebuild their lives with dignity and confidence.
The foundation also prioritizes prevention through education and advocacy. Programs like Inspire, aimed at junior high students, promote healthy relationships, communication skills, and resilience—planting seeds for a future free from violence.
Through emergency shelter, transitional housing, education, and community leadership, the Jessica Martel Memorial Foundation is creating lasting change and building a safer, more compassionate community for all. Certainly an organization worth getting some bucks sent their way from The Streets Initiative and some upstanding citizens of our fine city!
Thanks Edmonton!
