Incorporated in the City of Edmonton in 1981, The Edmonton Gleaners Association, more commonly known as Edmonton’s Food Bank, is one of the most recognized charities in the city. Their mandate is to provide food resources for Edmonton’s hungry: The Food Bank accepts and distributes food to over 250 partner agencies and on average provides hampers to over 20,000 individuals in need each month. Accomplished through donations and also by accessing surplus food from various vendors, the Food Bank strives to ensure that all people have the ability to feed themselves and their families.
In addition to donations of food, which can be made at most major grocery stores or directly at their main warehouse, The Food Bank also graciously accepts monetary donations to assist in their purchases of food each year to keep the shelves full when supplies begin to run low. The Food Bank is also grateful for anybody that is able to volunteer their time. Currently over 1500 volunteers share in excess of 75,000 hours per year to ensure that things are run efficiently and effectively, attempting to make hunger in Edmonton something that can hopefully be an afterthought.
